On September 19th, the Town of Clifton Park and Shenendehowa School District, held a joint press conference to announce a conceptual agreement for the purchase of property owned by the District.  The 34 plus acres of land was the subject of a public referendum in April of 2017. With a high turnout on an historical basis, voters denied the proposed sale of the property to a commercial developer, with over 70% voting in opposition. In the Winter of 2016, residents collected thousands of signatures in 30 days to force the referendum.  Community interest and press coverage of the future of the property has been sizable for more than a year. 

 

A joint committee comprised of representatives of the Town of Clifton Park and Shenendehowa School District began discussing the future of the property, following the referendum.  The conceptual agreement is the result of the committee’s meetings.  In addition to a conceptual agreement to purchase the property, the committee also worked cooperatively on a Memorandum of Understanding, that establishes a formal Clifton Park/Shen Municipal Education Committee to collaborate on matters important to both organizations and the people we serve.  An engaged partnership between the two entities, will allow for formal discussions relating to important topics and the pursuit of opportunities to enhance facilities, forge joint initiatives and consider alternatives to share services. 

Under the terms of the agreement, the Town of Clifton Park will purchase the property for $1.1million.  

Next Steps

  • The Board of Education will discuss the proposal at its regularly scheduled meeting on September 26, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. in the Gowana Library.   • At the regularly scheduled October 2, 2017 Town Board Meeting, the Town Board will discuss the agreement, receive public comment and consider taking action on the proposal.   • The Board of Education will look to take action on the proposal from the Town at its regularly scheduled meeting on October 10, 2017 at 7:00 P.M. in the Gowana Library. This is a business meeting that includes public comment at the beginning and end of the meeting.  Residents are invited to provide feedback on the proposal.
  • If the resolution is approved by the board, the finalization of the sale is contingent upon voter approval at a public referendum tentatively planned for December 5, 2017. More details will be announced in the coming weeks.    
  • If the sale is approved by school district residents, the Clifton Park Town Board will conduct a comprehensive, public planning process. The process will follow the same template as other long-term planning processes conducted by the Town Board in recent years and will include opinions and ideas form the community derived from public meetings.  The Town is committed to investing funds to ensure there is a successful planning process and to complete short-term improvements to enhance the community’s enjoyment of the public parcel.  The Town Board has been extremely successful in acquiring grant funding and will aggressively pursue grants for every stage of the planning and execution process.
